Abstract of PH.D Thesis

Conducted a full literature search, researched and analyzed original documents and wrote on Enhanced unimodal and multimodal biometric recognition and template security using fuzzy vault. Focuses on enhanced template protection; The Biometric systems without human intrusion confirm the identity of a person based on his anatomical and behavioral characteristics such as fingerprint, face, iris, voice and gait. Biometric traits characterize a strong and everlasting ‘link' between a person and his identity while traits cannot be simply lost, shared or faked. A biometric template is a digital reference of distinct characteristics that are extracted from a biometric sample. The feature set obtained during enrollment is stored in the system database as a template. Disparate passwords, when biometric templates are compromised, it is not feasible for a valid user to rescind his biometric identifiers and change to another set of uncompromised identifiers. Due to this irrevocable nature of biometric data, intervene against the stored templates constitute a major security and privacy peril in a biometric system. There are various techniques available in the literature which make use of passwords, smart cards etc., to provide network related security. But these conventional authentication systems have several limitations such as unreliability, vulnerable to molest, stealing of passwords, etc. So, a novel authentication system becomes necessary to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks. Biometrics is the technique of evaluating and statistically analysing biological data that can be used to recognize various biometric features. Biometric features like fingerprint, palmprint, dorsal hand vein and finger knuckle print are used to provide security to the users. In fact, these biometric features are very reliable compared to the traditional methods. The primary aim of this research is to propose a novel technique for security purpose by using fuzzy vault implementation.
